Art 1(grades 9-12): Designed to expose and nurture students' interest in art , this entry level course will emphasize the basics and fundamentals of the art world. Students will discover, critique, design, and produce artwork in a variety of media including drawing, painting, and ceramics. Various art styles are explored, and students study some art history. This is a great class to learn to be an artist if you "think you can't draw." It is the desire of the art department that the student end the course with an overall appreciation and understanding of art and that the student will select additional course-work in one or more of the art courses offered at USA.
Drawing and Painting (grades 9-12): Improve your drawing and painting skills! Use pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, scratch board, markers, watercolor, pastels, tempera and acrylic paint. Learn new techniques to make beautiful works of art. Prerequisite: Must have taken Art 1 with a grade of "B" or better.
Sculpture and Ceramics (grades 9-12): Work with three-dimensional materials! Try making clay sculptures by hand and working on the pottery wheel. This class will also use plaster casting, mosaic, wire, fiber, and found objects for constructing forms. Prerequisite: Must have taken Art 1 with a grade of "B" or better.
Basic B & W Photography (grades 10-12): Learn how to shoot, develop, and print your own black and white pictures. This course emphasizes visual communication through photographic interpretation. A familiarization with a variety of photographic and darkroom techniques is introduced.
Advanced Photography (grades 10-12): This advanced black and white photography class is for intermediate and advanced students who have a basic knowledge of photography, taking pictures, and developing prints. Students will be encouraged to focus on a project of their choice. Professionalism in photography is an important goal in this class. Prerequisite: Must have taken basic photography with a grade of "B" or better.
Studio Art (grades 11-12): This course is designed for the more experienced art student. Students in this class will work on independent projects in drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography. This will be very helpful for constructing a portfolio for college level art school admission. Prerequisite: Students must have had one art class receiving no less than a "B" grade.
